SYNOPSIS

Grappling with the loss of her beloved, a reserved programmer begins employment at a controversial tech company specializing in high-end, artificial companions.

"What the story here is, I’m not entirely sure, but I don’t feel that I really need to know that. The film works, in my view, without necessarily knowing.  I suppose that some might be tempted to see these as involving an attempted erasure of those memories (Eternal Sunshine style), but it seems equally, if not more, plausible that they involve some transference of the Programmer's memories to the Laura companion, raising issues about who is actually being trained/programmed here.  Indeed, relationships always involve certain emotional and bodily memories, which are gradually “programmed" into us…  In this sense, one might even claim the film is “programming” its viewers’ memories, at a subliminal level, replicating what seems to be happening in the film." - R L Rutsky
