YOU, OR ME, OR PERHAPS SOMEONE ELSE

ME, OR PERHAPS SOMEONE ELSE

In this installation, three director’s monitors each display different 4-7 hour continuous shots of me, operating a camera, as I direct and film two actors reenacting a transcript of a two-hour audio recording accidentally capturing a fight between myself and my then lover. Offering the viewer an unaltered view of what unfolds behind-the-scenes—including discussions on character motivation and coverage, negotiations about sex scenes, on-site script revisions, my extremely subjective recollections of lived events, and, in some cases, lunch—, Me, Or Perhaps Someone Else renders typically obfuscated production practices transparent, inviting the viewer to evaluate the agency, authorship, and performances of the bodies on and off screen.

YOU, OR PERHAPS SOMEONE ELSE

Part narrative, part diary, part documentary, part essay —, You, Or Perhaps Someone Else is an autoethnographic hybrid film merging personal video archives, documentary footage, and filmed recreations of a two-hour audio recording of a lover's quarrel to explore the limits of documentary evidence, the complexities of recapturing reality through narrative film production, and the latent capitalist and propagandist drives of the moving image.
